Mighty Kin combines upbeat tempos and rhythms with the undulating melody lines of traditional Irish music to inspire their fans and lift their spirits. Their live shows have been described as “a Celtic music experience…”
Mighty Kin grew out of jam and busking sessions in Uptown Waterloo, Ontario. After Brian returned with an authentic, hand-made tenor Banjo from an extensive foray in his family’s home county of Galway, Ireland- he called up Nick (Celtic Guitar) and Claryssa (Fiddle) and asked them to come over to his house to play some music, wanting to share with them all that he had discovered in Ireland. “The music was already there- it was already in my heart and soul,” says Brian. In 2018, the three started playing small pub gigs around Waterloo Region, settling on the name “Mighty Kin”. “Mighty Kin sums up our approach- together we are mighty…” Brian mused. Later, Brian expanded the group to include a master Bodhran player from Dublin, David O’Leary and added a new award-winning fiddle player, Anna Smilek- bringing another dimension to their sound.
Mighty Kin’s dedication to maintaining an authentic and living link to the traditional sounds of Ireland, paired with their unique approach to performing playful, exciting, and complex workings of songs without vocals, have earned them quite a reputation locally, as the premiere must-see Celtic music act in Ontario.
